New Door Installation

New Garage Door Installation

The Largest Moving Object in Your Home Deserves the Right Installation

Whether you’re replacing a worn-out door, upgrading curb appeal, or outfitting a new build, a garage door installation is one of the higher-impact home improvements you can make. Done right, it works quietly and reliably for 20+ years. Done wrong — wrong spring sizing, improper track mounting, cheap hardware — and you’ll be dealing with problems inside of a year.

Door material (the door panels themselves) is priced separately from installation labor. We’ll help you source the right door or work with one you’ve already selected.

Choosing the Right Door

What Actually Matters

The door that looks great in a catalog may not be right for your climate, exposure, or daily use pattern. Here’s how we think about it.

Material

Steel is the most popular — durable, insulates well, holds paint. Aluminum is lighter with a modern look but dents more easily. Wood composite gives you a classic look with better durability and less seasonal movement than real wood.

Insulation (R-Value)

For attached garages or finished spaces, aim for R-12 or higher. Polyurethane foam (sandwiched between steel skins) outperforms polystyrene. Energy savings and temperature stability are real — especially in Virginia’s climate extremes.

Style & Size

Raised-panel, carriage house, and contemporary flush are the main residential styles. Standard widths are 8–9′ (single) and 16–18′ (double). Heights are typically 7′ or 8′. Non-standard sizes available — including RV and full-view.

Virginia Considerations

What Charlottesville Homeowners Should Know

Central Virginia’s hot summers, cold winters, and occasional ice storms create specific demands on garage doors. Thermal cycling — the door expanding and contracting with temperature swings — stresses lower-quality steel doors over time. Insulated doors moderate that stress, keep your garage livable year-round, and protect vehicles and stored equipment. We’ve seen enough uninsulated doors degrade prematurely in this climate to recommend against them in most situations.
