Garage Door Opener Service in Charlottesville
Whether your opener is grinding, sluggish, unresponsive, or just old enough to warrant an upgrade, we handle the full range of opener work — from a capacitor swap to a wall-mount jackshaft installation. The general rule: if the opener is under 10 years old and the problem is a discrete component (capacitor, logic board, gear set), repair makes sense. If it’s 15+ years old, replacement gets you modern safety features, smartphone access, and battery backup for comparable cost.
Which Opener Is Right for You
Chain Drive
The workhorse — reliable, affordable, widely available in parts. The trade-off is noise. Best for detached garages where sound isn’t a concern. Good entry point if budget is the primary driver.
Belt Drive
Quiet, smooth, and the most popular choice for attached garages — especially when there’s living space above the garage. Near-silent operation compared to chain drive. Our most-recommended upgrade for homeowners who want peace and quiet.
Jackshaft / Wall-Mount (LiftMaster 8500W)
Mounts on the wall beside the door rather than hanging from the ceiling — no trolley, no rail, no ceiling hardware. Frees up ceiling space for storage. Ideal for low headroom, cathedral ceilings, or high-lift systems. Extremely quiet. Our premium recommendation.
Battery Backup (LiftMaster 87504)
Belt drive with 1.25 HP motor, built-in camera, and integrated battery backup. The door works during power outages — critical if the garage is your primary entry. A strong recommendation for Virginia homeowners after any major storm season.
What Goes Wrong and What It Costs
Capacitor Failure
The capacitor provides the power surge to start the motor. When it fails, the motor hums but won’t turn — or runs very slowly. One of the most common and least expensive repairs. Quick fix.
Logic Board Replacement
The “brain” of the opener. Symptoms: erratic behavior, won’t respond to remotes, or random operation. Logic boards are brand- and model-specific. Worth replacing on openers under 10 years old; full replacement is usually smarter on older units.
Drive Gear & Sprocket Kit
Worn plastic gears inside chain or belt drive openers cause grinding and slipping. A gear kit repair extends life significantly on openers that are otherwise in good shape.
Safety Sensor Realignment
Photo-eye sensors near the floor must align to let the door close. Misalignment causes immediate reversal or refusal to close at all. Usually a quick adjustment — included in the service call.
Connect Your Garage to Your Smart Home
Modern openers — and many existing ones — can connect to your WiFi and integrate with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit via the myQ ecosystem. We handle setup and programming so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.
Remote Access
Open and close your garage from anywhere. Get alerts if the door is left open. Check status at any time from your phone.
Voice Control
Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit all work with myQ-enabled openers. “Hey Siri, close the garage” actually works.
Guest Access
Grant temporary access to contractors or family without handing over a physical remote. Revoke it when the job is done.
myQ Smart Hub add-on for compatible existing openers: from $60 installed. Built into most new LiftMaster openers at no extra cost.
